- 2 pounds ground beef or lamb
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1 cup beef broth
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 cups mashed potatoes (prepared)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
- Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or lamb until browned. Drain any excess fat.
- Add the chopped onion, diced carrots, and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for 5–7 minutes, until the vegetables are soft.
- Stir in the peas, beef broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 5 minutes, letting the mixture thicken slightly.
- Transfer the meat mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Spread the meat evenly.
- Spoon the mashed potatoes over the meat, smoothing the top with a spatula. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese if you like.
- Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes or until golden and bubbling on top.
- Let cool for a few minutes, garnish with parsley, and serve warm.
Notes
You can use leftover mashed potatoes for quicker prep. This dish can also accommodate additional vegetables like corn or green beans.
